MONTREAL | Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir looked relaxed and in control after a practice in front of the reporters on Friday at the Sylvio-Mantha Arena. The duo is at the heart of an irresistible sequence of victories and nothing seems to stop them.
The three-time Olympic medalists have already won gold twice this season in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. They did the same feat last year, also winning the title at the Grand Prix Final, then at the World Championships and the Four Continents Championships.
Both athletes are therefore in the perfect state of mind to perfect their preparations for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, which will take place from February 9 to 25.
“What’s good for us right now is that everything is working according to plan,” Virtue said. It did not happen often. It allows us to be more serene. “
"What we’re trying to do this year is take advantage of the moment,” said Moir. We enjoy our work together as if it was the last time. “
A winning team
To explain his success, the couple did not hesitate to give a good part of the credit to Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, his coaches, as well as to all the other specialists of his entourage.
"Our success is a testament to the quality of our team both on and off the ice,” said Virtue. The collaborative work and the good communication within the team were a turning point for us. “
A successful return
After being awarded two silver medals at the 2014 Olympics, the representatives of the Maple Leaf took the decision to put the competition aside for some time. However, they quickly felt the need to compete with the best in the world again.
"The competition was missing,” explained Moir. We knew after the Games in 2014 that we needed a break, not knowing for how long. The challenge and the pressure were missing, so we came back. “
"We started working with Marie-France and Patrice here in Montreal. We started creating programs. Seeing how they work, we realized we could do things differently. ”
One last time?
Expectations will be high for Virtue and Moir to bring a gold medal back to Canada after the Games. However, according to the main stakeholders, no one can put more pressure on their shoulders than themselves.
“We want to win,” said Moir. Since we are back, we said we wanted gold in Pyeongchang. We know what we have to do. We want to be the best and that’s what motivates us every day. “
Fans will have the opportunity to cheer on the two Canadians at the Olympics by sending them postcards printed inside the Cheerios cereal boxes.
It may be a last chance for fans to cheer on them, as the tandem may well end their career for good after the Games.
